Anyone with $8 to spend can become verified and get boosted by the Twitter algorithm. But the social media company stopped verifying ID after Elon Musk bought the platform in October 2022. Twitter introduced the verification program back in 2009 after being sued by baseball legend Tony La Russa over an impersonation account. Just because someone is “verified” on Twitter, it doesn’t mean the information they pass around can be seen as reliable. Needless to say, there’s no evidence that China or the Biden administration are using laser weapons against the U.S.īut the problem, of course, is that the people spreading this junk information have a blue checkmark.
